Becoming the Public Universal Friend: Gender, Architecture, LGBTQ Identity, and Place (Talk)

July 21 @ 1:30 pm - 2:30 pm

Free – $18.00

Dr. Jeff Iovannone, a specialist in LGBTQ heritage conservation, will discuss the life, legacy, and home of the Public Universal Friend. The Friend was a Revolutionary War-era genderless prophet who founded a spiritual community near current day Penn Yan, New York. Iovannone will consider the long tradition of gender diversity in American history, how norms of gender and sexuality are created through architecture and the built environment, the importance of documenting LGBTQ-related sites in rural locations, and the significance of the Friend’s story to the modern LGBTQ community.

This talk is included in general Museum admission.
